Ending of Summer Full Moon Celebration honoring our First Period/Primera Sangre and connecting to our Root Chakra!
08-24-10

Ending of Summer Full Moon Celebration honoring our First Period/Primera Sangre and connecting to our Root Chakra! One more month before the Summer officially ends and while I know you want to be saying , “I Am” – grounded, present, safe, secure, healthy and ready to take on the world as you get ready to go to school or back to work! But instead you are finding yourself in what seems a never ending asking of “what is the point of being here,” or “why am I here.” You are feeling disconnected, rootless, & alienated from others. You have mood swings, lack of energy both physically and mentally and you are fearing for your survival but lack the energy to do anything about it? You are afraid of change. You lack confidence, have a huge fear of being abandoned, are harboring self-destructive tendencies and have become disinterested in life. You are thinking about your mother more than ever , questioning your sexuality and your ability to be intimate and erotic. If you are feeling any of the above, Casa has an important event coming up to support you in getting through this tough time and reconnecting to your power. REGISTER TODAY with US and if you have any questions please feel free to call us718-585-5540 bring your daughters too.

Casa takes the Summer to Nurture its Roots......
07-08-10

Dear Casa Friends and Family,

You may be wondering where Casa has been? We have been giving birth to ourselves and we have good news! On June 8th, 2010 Casa gave birth to our newest member. Natalia Lantigua; a 10 year participant of the Fuerza/Power youth program transitions and joins our staff. Natalie as she is known is currently a college student at Hostos Communty College and has come back to ensure that other young women have a safe space like the one she was in.

With eight brand new board members, Casa Atabex Ache is going on a summer hiatus to build our internal capacity to continue to bring to you much needed healing and transformational programming. During this time we will be looking within and building the organization from the core, this will include:

·     cleaning our offices, maintenance, filing and completing our database and launching our new website;

·     restructuring our organization to be sustainable at the toughest times of economic shifts

·     re-envisioning our mission to continue serving the needs of South Bronx young and adult womyn;

·     renewing our human capital (womyn power) by providing time and space for us to engage, encourage and strategize as we recruit and train new leadership and board;

During this summer hiatus, e-mails and phone calls will be checked and all messages will be returned during our working hours Tuesday, Wed or Thursday 10-6pm. All urgent communication and request should be directed to casaatabexache@aol.com.

In the meantime, there here are a few things you can do to help us in this process of building Casa Atabex Ache from the inside out. To support us in growing roots and becoming a grounded organization in South Bronx the heart of New York City please…

1.  Reply to this message with an honest reflection about us. We want to know from you: What are our strengths? What can we do differently with recommendations? What would you love us to be doing in the future?                                                                      `

2.  Are you an artist, designer, have construction skills ? We are rebuilding Casa and need support with painting, reworking wooden floors etc.  Let us know if you are willing to donate a few hours for the cause.

3. We are looking for powerful, courageous, fearless womyn to support us in creating an environmentally friendly healing space where transformation happens through the spirit. Write us and let us know if you are interested in joining our collective, providing workshops and helping us fundraise.

4.  Make a donation to Casa Atabex Ache today. Your financial support makes this work possible.  Visit our  www.casaatabexache.org or (for Facebook users) our Casa Atabex Ache facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/profile.php?id=100001210567937&ref=profile&v=info

Casa Atabex Ache and FuntoSalud Delegation to Haiti April 17-30, 2010
03-12-10

SAVE THE DATE --- APRIL 17-30th, 2010
FuntoSalud and Casa Atabex Ache Delegation to Haiti

<b>AYITI CHERE! ~~~~~~~ AYITI PAP PERI!</b>
<b>L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE + DIOS, PATRIA, LIBERTAD</b>

Good Day,
Alba Mota, Dayanara Marte, Maria D. Moreno, and I, Sally Hyppolite, are excited to be in conversation with you about our 2010 Border Health Mission. Thank you for your expressed interest in joining or requesting information about our COLLECTIVE WOMYN OF COLOR DELEGATION to several Border Towns and Bateyes starting from Manzanillo, Monte Criste in Northern Dominican Republic to Dajabon, Barahona, Meaca, Deaca, Port-au-Prince and finally to the Southern Haitian town of Jacmel.

While this delegation is taking place soon after the tragic January 12th earthquake in Haiti, this is Funtosalud International’s Second Annual Border Health Mission and Casa Atabex Ache’s First Annual Border Mission.

<b>FuntoSalud International through its Border Health Mission (BHM)</b>,  in collaboration with Fundacion Todo Por La Salud in the Dominican Republic have been facilitating volunteer-led humanitarian missions in the Dominican and Haiti Border Town since 2008, an impoverished region most often neglected and ignored in the media. Hunger and chronic bacterial and parasitic diseases are constant dilemma. Through their Border Health Mission, FuntoSalud has been able to deliver a self-sustainable humanitarian and volunteer model which empowers the Haitian and Dominican people through solidarity.

http://www.funtosaludintl.org

<b>Fundacion Todo Por La Salud</b>  has been organizing medical operatives consistently since the late 1980’s in rural Border towns, Bateyes and impoverished communities in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. During these medical operatives, Dr. Maritza provides the beneficiaries with free medical care, medicine, food, water, clothing, and toys for the children.

http://www.funtosalud.org

<b>Casa Atabex Ache ~ The House of Womyn’s Power</b>  Founded was in 1994 in the South Bronx by an intergenerational group of women. Casa, unlike the multitude of service providers in low-income communities that sought to diagnose and treat community residents, these founders envisioned a grassroots, nonprofit organization that would provide women of color with the necessary support and information needed to embark on journeys of self-healing and recovery.

Today, Casa Atabex Ache continues this rich legacy by supporting women of color to reconnect with their individual and collective powers of healing and action so that they may transform their lives, families, and communities. Utilizing a holistic model, Casa's mission is to support the emotional, spiritual, physical, and intellectual development of women and their health needs related to their experience of abuse and neglect.
Casa's programs are purposefully designed to support young and adult women to recognize their strengths and the tools they have within, their cultural and spiritual practices by reclaiming our her-story of self- healing that is rooted in non-traditional medicine, techniques and healing practices and consequently use them to reclaim our reproductive health.

http://www.casaatabexache.org

<b>The Haitian Coalition</b> is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the social, educational, and economic development of Haitian youth and families living in Somerville and the Greater Boston area.  It was founded to serve Haitians living in Somerville and surrounding communities following the flight of thousands of Haitians to the Greater Boston area after a September 1991 military coup in Haiti.
Haitian activists founded the Coalition in 1992 to meet the needs of these new immigrants who lacked the resources to thrive in Massachusetts.  By 1997, the Coalition had gathered enough support from the community to become an independent nonprofit organization.  In its early years, the Coalition fought racism, promoted Haitian culture, and helped Haitian residents gain access to services and programs from legal aid, social services, voter registration, and small business training.

http://www.haitian-coalition.org

<b>Delegation:</b>

FuntoSalud and Casa Atabex Ache will be collaborating with to bring together 15-20 womyn and men, who will provide comprehensive medical care, reproductive health workshops, sustainable arts and crafts, emotional release and healing, music, street theater, herbal medicine and herbal farming, and cultural celebrations. We will also take humanitarian aid, food, clothing, as well as, toys and books for children.
This is just a sneak peak of the wonderful work that we will be doing to plant the seeds for the completion of The FuntoSalud Comprehensive and Alternative Health Care Center for the most vulnerable and impoverished communities of the Bateyes and Border Towns of Haiti and the Dominican Republic which have been neglected, exploited and systemically ignored in the media for years.

While the existing Fundacion Todo Por La Salud Clinic is located on the Border of the Dominican Republic; it is the closest healthcare facility for the Haitians not only living within the town of Monte Cristi in the Dominican Republic, but also for Haitians living in Northern Region of Haiti. Since 1980, women, children and men numbering in the hundreds have had to cross the border into the Dominican Republic through the The Massacre River/Rio Massacre, to obtain basic medical care including: prenatal care, GYN services and other reproductive health education and services. It is our goal to build a self-sustainable health center, The FuntoSalud Comprehensive and Alternative Health Care Center, to not only care for community people but also train Haitians and Dominicans to powerfully take charge of their own healthcare.

<b>"Imagine a pregnant women wading across the borders river, more than waist deep  with her children on a tube to get prenatal care and pediatric support."</b>

<b>Delegates:</b>

This year, we are making <b>A CALL TO ACTION</b> and will be choosing delegates through an application process. Please note that everyone on this delegation will providing 7-8 hours or more of Humanitarian service and support over 700 families a day (approximately 2,500 Haitian and Dominican people).  In keeping with Funtosalud's mission to create solidarity between the Haitian and Dominican people, 75% of the delegates need to be people fluent in Spanish, French or Haitian Creole and of Haitian or Dominican decent (PLEASE THAT NO ONE WILL BE EXCLUDED FROM THE APPLICATION PROCESS).

<b>CALL TO ACTION:</b>

We are calling on female and male GYN specialists, pediatric nurses and doctors, 3 nurses, 2 dentists, an herbalist with knowledge of herbal medicine and farming, a dermatologist, farmers, artists of any medium, reproductive health educators, sustainable or earth artists, organizers, healers, midwifes and medicine women.

Past Border Health Missions have found that children suffer from skin diseases, bone marrow and vitamin deficiency, upper respiratory diseases and parasites due to mal- nutrition, pregnant mothers giving birth to still born babies (maternal and neonatal mortality), STI’S, HIV/AIDS, nutritional deficiencies, heart disease, illiteracy, mental health, tooth and gum disease and death due to common diseases such as the flu, tuberculosis, pneumonia and malaria, (bacterial and parasitic diseases); most of which can be prevented by regular healthcare, immunizations, prevention &educational services.

Description of the Event:

In honor of International Womyns Month, the 2nd Annual Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen is dedicated to Faith, Feminism and Hip Hop.  This event will take place at Hostos Community College, located in the South Bronx, the birthplace of Hip Hop.  Hip Hop's home is also the poorest congressional district in the nation where negative statistics on womyn are staggering .

The South Bronx is a community filled with churches and botanicas full of spiritual elements, powerful curanderas and healers that constantly provide images that reflect their racial and cultural heritage.  For generations, immigrant families tap into music and art in order to stay rooted to their homelands and survive their displacement. Behind closed doors, families keep praying to their ancestors, deities and saints. When family members are ill, or when disasters strike, they call upon their powers by creating the most beautiful of altars for praying, worshiping, giving thanks, lighting candles and manifesting their dreams.

Please come out and join is as we liberate our spirits through Hip Hop.

Casa Atabex Ache & Freedom Community Center Present

The 2nd Annual Healing the Rainbow Health

                   and Organizing Fair

                      Saturday September 20th, 2008

                 Dedicated to Sandra Hernandez

                           Dear Community,

It is my pleasure to submit this letter of support on behalf of Casa Atabex Aché/House of Womyns'

A          Power and Freedom Community Center.  Please join us in a call for unity, and in a Celebration of our

Community.  We would like to invite you to sponsor/endorse our event in any  of the following ways:

·         Join a committee or take on a task

·         A monetary donation

·         Purchase an organizational table

·         Provide gift certificates, goody bag items, promotional goods, and/or items to raffle

Your sponsorship  & support will make a difference!  This year CASA & Freedom will expand our work to meet the needs of the LGBTQTSI community  of color in our programs and communities. Casa  has added the “Healing the Rainbow” program to ACHE-Alternative Cooperative for Healing and Empowerment (A Natural Health And Wellness Organizing Center).  Healing the Rainbow is a by-product of our continuous work with the LGBTQTSI community providing a safe space for healing and reproductive health.  Casa will support queer young and adult womyn of color activists, organizers and community folk to recharge, to have access to quality alternative health care and resources as they take care of themselves they are also learning valuable tools for social justice.  Through its programs, “Healing the Rainbow” will address the increased emotional, spiritual and physical traumas that we face due to race, class, gender, sexuality, gender expression, language, culture, neglect and poverty.  Healthcare discrimination is a trauma that is often unsupported and unchecked.

Through ACHE - “Healing the Rainbow” queer womyn of color will have access to health and wellness classes  and trainings that include self-GYN examinations, childbirth/family planning, STD/HIV prevention and alternative care, herbal medicine, nutrition, healthy meal preparation & holistic therapies/natural medicine  treatment of weak immune systems and trauma, training on our self-healing and organizing model. We will provide monthly healing circles – a monthly healing womyn’s group to break the silence & address issues of anger, fear & self hate, discuss reproductive health issues affecting queer womyn including discussions about domestic violence, hate crimes, sexual assault, homophobia Self-mutilation, low self esteem, disordered eating etc with the aim of developing individual and group action strategies to address the health needs and social issues queer womyn are confronting.

G          Gender & Racial justice within Movement-building:

Why is Womyn Spelled with a “Y”?

Womyn is spelled with a "y" as a way of symbolizing we have the power to redefine ourselves and

             challenge patriarchy

and gender roles.  We stand at the intersection of power structures based on race, class and gender.

We are striving to create a safe space for queer  womyn of color to be free from violence while breaking

the silence of trauma and abuse to transform their lives and communities.  In this space we can

respectfully struggle together toward a vision of justice and freedom from gender & sexuality based

violence in which we explore how to expand our analysis of gender while maintaining organizing strategies that move toward liberation, politics and autonomy.

Special Healing Circle for Queer Womyn of Color & New Orleans Survivors 9-6-08
09-04-08

You can feel it in the air
As we are in the transition from Late Summer to Fall approaching in two weeks,
you can feel the transition in the air.
With this transition comes displacement, not being grounded, threat of World War 3 with Russia,
& violence at home

Having to let go of those lazy summer days and get into a structured routine of School & Work
Having to let go of control as Mother Nature retaliates against all the pollution & destruction of the earth
Having to let go of being stuck & powerless because the People of Color in New Orleans still in the process of rebuilding their homes, communities, bodies & spirits were meet on the 3rd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with another forced evacuation due to Hurricane Gustavo.
People of Color, especially Womyn of Color, low-income, under-employed, and Queer folks that were written off due to capitalism, patriachy & white supremacy are forced out again of their neighborhoods.
You have for example 2,000 people in a Mississippi shelter with 5 bathrooms to share, limited food & water.
People having to protest for the right to return home to New Orleans

A democratic national convention that wouldn't let Rebel Diaz perform because they were afraid
of what they were going to say.
A democratic presidential candidate who want to go after Iran & Russia, deploying more troops verses ending the war
A republican national convention regime that raids activist homes, turns away anti-war soldiers
 & arrest activist for breathing.

You can feel it in the air
You can feel it in your body
You can feel it in your spirits

Join Casa in Calling for New Orleans Residents to have the right to Return Home
We will be sending you more information on how you can get involved & who to call
In the mean time we will be excepting donations of money, food, health supplies, clothing, etc. to send down to NOLA residents, organizers and activist such as the New Orleans Women's Health & Justice Initiative, Safe Streets Strong Communities,  The Workers Center, 7th Ward Neighborhood Center

You can drop off supplies at the next Healing Circle on this Saturday,
September 6th, 2008 from 1-5pm

________________________________________________________________________________________

A Special Invitation from Toyin Adebanjo, a Queer Nigerian, filmmaker, healer & organizer am personally inviting you,  and especially Queer couples, single Queer Womyn*, to a very special healing circle for Queer Womyn* of Color. I am reclaiming the month of September for me and our community to heal, & be in love.  This summer I have been on my journey of finding love.  I am learning many things about myself, love, relationship & the importance of healing my past.

I’ll be honest, I like you have been looking for love outside of myself, in the clubs, at Pride events,. which all give me the same answer.  I need to find love within me before I can manifest love outside of myself that satisfies me on all levels.  I am learning that being in love with yourself or another womyn can only be drama free when you are willing to look at yourself and heal the violence’s you have experienced, address the internalized oppression you carry & identify the ways you oppress yourself & others in your life.  I have been invisible in relationships like I couldn’t communicate, like no one knew how to love me, I thought I was alone in thinking that way.  I have been invisible in my own life because of violence, fear of violence & rejection.  I had to learn that violence is not who I am.

Come bare your truth with me at the next circle.  I ask you to come out and scream, cry, shake and let go of the past, so you can have an healthy relationship with yourself & your partner
.
Join me if you:
Have Been Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places.
Feel Like You Are Not Being Seen or Heard In Your Relationship
Are You Experiencing Violence In Your Relationship
Are Feeling Rejected Because You Are Not In A Relationship
        Haven’t Found The Love Within

This September 6th, 2008 circle is about love and relationships with yourself or a partner.
It’s about completion with yourself, your partner, and the summer season.
What are the things you have wanted to say and have been afraid to say.
It’s about speaking truth to self & your partner.
It’s about letting go of un-healthy relationships that no longer serve you.
It’s about letting go of the parts of you that no longer work to make room for your life.

Join me Casa.  Invite your friends, co-workers, family members, bring your partner and complete together.

We will be having the 2nd annual Healing the Rainbow Health & Organizing Fair on September 20th, 08 from 2-7pm. This day is open to all members of the Queer community, families, artist, organizers, healers, teachers, etc.   This day is an opportunity to come out and reclaim our streets, power, communities and lives.  Their will be healing stations – massage, aromatherapy, mammography, and other health screenings for our all too neglected community.

We ask that you contact Casa to RSVP, table as a Queer & Queer friendly organization, table as a healer, health practitioner, artist and organizer.  Come out and speak about your current campaigns, learn about alternative healing techniques and get connected to each other.

We are looking for organizations to sponsor/ endorse, support with planning and outreach for the event.  CALL 718-585-5540 to Register Today! Or email karenatcasa@aol.com, toyinatcasa@aolc.com

Winter Intent:

1. Dreaming the dark

2. Look within

3. At rest (earth & people)

In the spirit of the Winter Solstice, we go inward to encounter…

… she who stands for justice, that say no to all oppression. We create ourselves every winter,

but only when we dare touch our essence. That place we call the darkness, that place of power.

You are invited to open to this place of magic, of new beginnings and re-dream yourself in your

own way in the quiet splendor of winter. Nurture your dormant seed. Feed, water, give it light,

and allow it to be by honoring every aspect of your being.

The winter is about being the wise womyn/crone. It’s about dreaming the dark and going in.

Taking time to be within ourselves and prepare to shed the old so that we can rebirth ourselves

in the spring.

Suggested Affirmations:

I voice my needs

Freedom is a birthright I enjoy

It is easy to articulate my feelings

I am freed through communication

I release my anger, I embrace joy

Others recognize my needs and honour them

I connect with my needs, and let them be known

See the Fuerza/Power Young Womyn Representing @
Hip Hop Meets Spoken Wordz 3: A Fundraiser & Coat Drive for the Homeless!

~ Friday in January 24th, from 6:00 - 10 pm

Our children are being left out in the streets during the day and night!

" I am 15, single parent, taking care of my siblings, at risk of foster care

placement and failing my classes because I am homeless!"

What should be a, Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday for the young women in our

Fuerza Program, instead, is a winter with devastating new policies leaving young

and adult women and children in the street. For nearly a decade Casa has been able
to support over 5,000 young womyn fight against and heal from the impact of violence,
& abuse , child sexual, physical abuse, unequal education, poor or non-existing health
care, eating dis-orders, self mutilation etc. This winter& holiday season nearly
70% of our young womyn are homeless.

"Me and my family suffered days and nights for two month literally with no home,
no change of clothes,no food and no sleep. Moving from place to place every night with my two little brothers, sister
and pregnant mother in critical condition." - Stephanie 17

"I'm trying so hard but they don't care. That's what they want, for you to give up. Imagine going
to class wondering what the hell is happening. I'm in a shelter, trying to make it, beat the system,
you think everything is going to be fine until you get a phone call during class saying you gotta
leave (school) now because they didn't accept us." Natalie, 18 teen mother

Join the Young Womyn of the Fuerza/Power Project in Fighting Back! We ask that you support
these young womyn with a donation to keep them and other young womyn off the streets –
through the Fuerza/Power project, Casa provides them with after-school shelter, a stipend,
clothing, natural healthcare, alternative education in Human Rights, and warm, healthy food
which they desperately need. Support the young womyn in being in ACTION and bringing in
the New Year – FIGHTING BACK – they are demanding:

The right to a Passing Education.

The right to an adequate Education that prepares them to live independent and healthy lives

The right to safe, affordable and clean housing

Join us at this event to support Homeless Women, Children and Families!

And DONT FORGET --OUR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS--YOUNG WOMEN SPEAK ABOUT LOVE, HEALTH, AIDS,

Campaign to End Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) Continues at Casa:

In response to the increase in violence, Casa Atabex Ache have taken up a
community base campaign to end all forms of violence against our youth.
We define Child Sexual Abuse as sexual, mental, physical, emotional and
spiritual violence: Child Sexual Abuse and all forms of family & community
violence; violates the Human Rights of womyn and children throughout New York
City. This violence, which is compounded in communities of color need to be
addressed in a holistic and socially conscious framework that address the
impact of economics, poverty, homelessness, healthcare and the lack of
resources available to communities color.

Casa is available for workshops in house and off-site to support with resources,
trainings, and healing techniques for youth, staff, foster parents, ACS workers,
adults, social workers, parents, parent advocates, school administrators, etc.
Question we address : What do young womyn need as support after Child Sexual
Abuse and what tools of healing/prevention can we offer? Why are safe spaces
needed to address and support young womyn of color on their journey of self
healing? How to place child sexual abuse in a human rights framework that has
spirituality at its core and young womyn of color at the center of its impact.
How does healing and transformation play a role in young womyn creating social
change?

Casa is also available to present our video: “yo tengo fuerza-i have power
young womyn's healing, transforming and being free" stories of young womyn
of color who are at risk of being lost to the system, are in the system or
have aged out of foster care and their journey of self-healing & social justice.
You will see the impact of abuse and neglect on the choices that they make and
their relationship to themselves, their families, communities and partners.

Join and be active in our CSA Campaign. Contact Karen Lopez our Promotor De Salud at Casa to book
a workshop, showing of our video or for more information at 718-585-5540 or
email at karenatcasa@aol.com.

that is not coming. Its not about asking from above , its about how do you construct
form the bottom and say we are going to govern ourselves, we are nto going to wait
for instructions and for someone to govern us , the people command…….El Pueblo Mandar……

Join CASA---- In APRIL for A WOMYN OF COLOR

Healing Delegation to New Orleans. For 3-days Casa

CASA LAUNCHES ACHÉ!

The First Alternative Womyn’s Health & Wellness Cooperative
in the South Bronx - ACHÉ
/ Alternative
Cooperative for Healing & Empowerment
for young and adult womyn launched last Fall 2007.
Inspired by the womyn in the
Zapatista community and their organizing & movement building for autonomy we are creating our model for a
sustainable community and accessible healthcare for community, activist & organizers. The cooperative will
support womyn's health and wellness needs while being a respite to heal from internalized oppression and
integrate self care into daily practice.

ACHÉ will have spirituality, culture & human rights at the core of its sustainability.
We use earth based
spirituality to create sacred space to align ourselves with the healing elements of the season for the
healing of our mind, body and spirit. Join our monthly healing circles(–a monthly healing women’s group
to break the silence of issues affecting community women including trauma of DV, violence, sexual assault,
self mutilation, low self esteem, disordered eating etc ).
We also offer complementary workshops such as yoga, reiki, alternative fitness, afro-Caribbean
rhythms, healing remedies, acupressure, meditation etc.

Join our healers network! - We are looking for health practitioners, curanderas, folk healers,
midwives, organizers, artist, etc. to join our Womyn of Color Healers Network which will
regularly provide free or low cost health care and wellness classes and trainings.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Casa could not do this without your support. Please volunteer with us today to
sustain our cooperative. We need volunteers to do outreach, database, fundraising,
organizing, website development etc.

the contributions of donors like you that we are able to sustain and
transform womyn in their journey of becoming the powerful womyn that
they are.

5th Annual Womyn Warrior/Mujeres Guerreras Ceremony/Celebration
Presenting “Spirit Transcending Gender: Two Spirited Awards

Celebrating the LGBTTQI & Womyn of Color Communities ability to go beyond the constraints of gender & sexuality and dare to be fully oneself, fully human as their spirit intended. This is a call for unity and for an awakening to spirit that is totally non-denominational & non gender conforming.

Warrior Womyn/ Mujeres Guerreras is dedicating this event to our indigenous ancestors and community all over the world. Casa dedicates the Two Spirit awards to the LGBTQ people of color community, and our allies. Inspired by the indigenous manifestation of gender & Two-Spirit community, that challenges the rigid gender binary view of the world we are inviting you to celebrate with us our ability to transcend gender stereotyping and dare to be fully one-self, fully human as spirit intended.

On July 21st, 2007 Casa Atabex Ache will honor & celebrate powerful activist, organizers, artist, community people and organizations who…..

• Declare that tolerance is not enough & fight for human rights, access to reproductive health, healthcare and ownership of our bodies
• Support the LGBTQ community to go beyond gender roles and move beyond fear & powerlessness to be visible & free no matter what!
• Whose every essence is fighting social justice against violence & oppression (patriarchy, homophobia, sexism & racism)
• Support the LGBTO community in determining their own lives while creating and shifting the definition of family & marriage.
• Celebrate humanity, refuse to be invisible & are transforming power!
• Are creating justice and liberated spaces, creating FREEDOM!

Climbing Poetry and many, many more……..

This event is sponsored by The NYC Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project & Adolescent AIDS Program at Montefiore Medical Center
Why Two Spirit: Casa’s definition of Two Spirit serves a couple of purposes ….
1. Everything “ thing” and Every “one” is living manifestation of Spirit
2. The Diversity of spirituality is to be honored and celebrated through rituals, dance and ceremony.
The Indigenous definition of Two Spirit- comes from the acceptance rooted in the spiritual teachings that say all life is sacred and that the Creator must have a reason for making someone different. This gender role was not based in sexual activities or practices, but rather the sacredness that comes from being different Being given the gift of two-spirits meant that this individual had the ability to see the world from two perspectives at the same time. This greater vision was a gift to be shared with all, and as such, Two-spirited beings were revered as leaders, mediators, teachers, artists, seers, and spiritual guides. They were treated with the greatest respect, and held important spiritual and ceremonial responsibilities It is not an accident that Two-spirited people are once again emerging in their communities at the same time and in the same way that the drum, the pipe, the sweat, the medicines and other sacred aspects of community and cultural life are returning.
About Casa Atabex Ache :

This year CASA will expand our work to intent fully meet the needs of the LGBTQ community of color in our programs. We will add the “Healing the Rainbow” program to ACHE-Alternative Cooperative for Healing and Empowerment ( A Natural Health and Wellness Organizing Center). Healing the Rainbow is a by-product of our continuous work with the LGBTQ community providing a safe space for healing and reproductive health. Casa will support queer young and adult people of color activists, organizers and community folk to recharge, to have access to quality alternative health care and resources-- as they take care of themselves they are also learning valuable tools for social justice. Through our programs, “ Healing the Rainbow” will address the increased emotional, spiritual and physical traumas that we face due to race, class, gender, sexuality, gender expression, language, culture, neglect and poverty. Healthcare discrimination is a trauma that is often unsupported and unchecked.

Through ACHE “Healing the Rainbow” queer folk of color will have access to health and wellness classes and trainings that include self gyn examinations, childbirth/family planning, STD/HIV prevention and alternative care, herbal medicine, nutrition, healthy meal preparation & holistic therapies/natural medicine treatment of weak immune systems and trauma. We will provide monthly healing circles –a monthly healing group to break the silence & address issues of anger, fear & self hate, discuss reproductive health issues affecting queerfolk including discussions about domestic violence, hate crimes, sexual assault, homophobia self mutilation, low self esteem, disordered eating etc with the aim of developing individual and group action strategies to address the health needs and social issues queerfolk are confronting.

Long-term impact
The long-term impact of ACHÈ’ s “Healing the Rainbow” program is healthier queer communities empowered to transform injustice. ACHÈ will serve as an important community-building model that other grassroots organizations or neighborhoods can adapt that supports their health and wellness needs while being a respite to heal from internalized oppression. ACHÈ seeks to reduce the impact of the isolation & trauma activists of color, experience Activists at times neglect their own needs and become “burnt-out”, which limits creativity and longevity in the field.

Gender & Racial justice within Movement-building- Why is Womyn Spelled with a “Y”?
At Casa, Womyn is spelled with a "y" as a way of symbolizing we have the power to redefine ourselves and challenge patriarchy & gender roles. We stand at the intersection of power structures based on race, class and gender. Focusing specifically on gender based violence against young and adult & queer womyn of color who are often punished for their failure to conform to, or inability to attain, representations of white womanhood (straight, feminine, gentile). We are striving to create a safe space for queer womyn of color to be free from violence while breaking the silence of trauma and abuse to transform their lives and communities. In this space we can respectfully struggle together toward a vision of justice and freedom from gender & sexuality based violence in which we explore how to expand our analysis of gender while maintaining organizing strategies that move toward liberation politics and autonomy.

~What's Going On At CASA~

Healers Pouch: Message from Anna Ortega the Spring Goddess at Casa

We were born into this world as perfection. We had everything we needed

to be alive—our bodies, hearts, and spirits were free and ready to grow!

We were trusting babies who thrived through nurturance and connection and

were natural explorers. Somewhere along the line, we experienced our first hurt

and the pain which followed. Our hearts became less open.

Spring is about the heart’s rebirth—it is about the baby and little girl within us

breaking-through to joy and celebration. Reclaiming her ability to trust, to connect, and be alive!

The heart chakra, one of the energy centers within us, is ready to freed!

Heart-energy is about self-love and love of the planet—it is about justice.

Our earth mother will be our guide this season, nurturing us as we grow—protecting

us as we develop along our paths. At Casa, the earth mothers are our foundation—Atabex from the Tainos

of the Caribbean and Akua-ba from West Africa.

Reclaim your vitality!

Contact Justine Torress at Casa to book
a workshop, showing of our video or for more information at 718-585-5540 or

CASA LAUNCHES ACHÉ!

The First Alternative Womyn’s Health & Wellness Cooperative
in the South Bronx - ACHÉ
/ Alternative
Cooperative for Healing & Empowerment
for young and adult womyn launched this Fall.

Casa Allies with:

US- FDA Attacks Complementary and Alternative Health Care Dr. John Gilbert

FDA Attacks Complementary and Alternative Health Care from Dr. John Gilbert

I just spent three days reading, re-reading, researching and discussing the proposed FDA guidelines

for "Complementary and Alternative Medicine" with two FDA attorneys. You can download a copy of this

proposal for yourself at: http://www.fda.gov/ohrms/dockets/dockets/06d0480/06d0480.htm

If you don't suspect the pharmaceutical companies control the FDA, you may want to research that further

by visiting http://www.healthfreedomusa.org

There is no facet of complementary and alternative health care that is not affected. If the FDA adopts this

proposal, all natural health care would be illegal even for medical doctors.

Essential oils, herbs, herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies, minerals, nutritional supplements, plant enzymes

and vitamins are redefined in this proposal as "medicine." Very simply, medicine is under the jurisdiction of the FDA and,

by law, only licensed medical doctors may prescribe "medicines." Anybody else who advises, advocates, counsels, distributes,

markets, recommends or suggests anybody use "medicine" is practicing medicine without a license. This is a felony in the USA

punishable by fines and incarceration.

Aromatherapy, auricular therapy, biofeedback, color therapy, homeopathy, ahypnotism, naturopathy, neurotherapy, nutritional

consulting, reflexology, sound therapy and wellness consulting are among the alternative health modalities being redefined

as "Alternative Medicine." This subtle change of vocabulary from "alternative health care" to "alternative medicine" makes all

of these industries subject to control by the FDA as medicine. Only medical doctors would be allowed to provide, prescribe and

supervise the delivery of these services. Anybody else who provided any of these services would be practicing medicine without

a license and subject to incarceration and fines.

That's the bad news. The good news is we have until April 30, 2007 to voice our opinion against this proposal to eliminate

complementary and alternative health care in America. Almost 100,000 people have already filed their objection. According to

Dr. Rima Laibow, medical director of the Natural Therapies Foundation, we need 50 times that many people to respond by the end of the month.

Please stand up and be counted. Go to http://tinyurl.com/2u7ghc and file your petition in support of natural health care, in

support of complementary and alternative health care as we know it today. If you require more information,

please visithttp://www.healthfreedomusa.org/index.php or read the FDA proposed policy for yourself.

Take to the Streets May 1st 2007! In support of immigrant rights:

No shopping, no work, no school!

Demand an end to deportations & raids!

Fight for equal rights for all workers, U.S. and foreign born!

Across the country on Tuesday, May 1st 2007, tens of thousands of workers are expected to take to

the streets once again to say no to anti-immigrant, anti-worker policies.

The demonstrations are a continuation of last year’s historic marches of undocumented and documented

immigrants as well as their supporters against the highly repressive and punitive Sensenbrenner

legislation that criminalized workers. The current raids and deportations in cities across the country

carried out by ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) are just as deplorable and unacceptable.

By singling out Latinos, Asians, Muslims, Caribbeans, and Africans they are thoroughly racist. Not only

are they meant to warn immigrants that they better not fight against super-exploitation, it is a message to all

working people in this country. As the economic crisis deepens workers—whether they are foreign or U.S. born—are

being warned that they had better accept these conditions. The raids and the anti-immigrant climate are designed

to bust unions as well as to foster divisions among U.S. and foreign born workers.

But workers are fighting back. Across the country, the most exploited and poorest workers are standing together.

Day laborers, for example are standing up to racist attacks whether they emanate from goons or from local city or

state officials.

Others are standing up as well. Several unions such as the International Longshore Workers Union, Local 10 and

the San Francisco Labor Council are passing resolutions in favor of May 1st and mobilizing to get people out on

May Day. In New York , a UFCW localpushed the May 1st event at a labor event demanding justice for Smithfield workers

in Tar Heel, North Carolina .The International Action Center , a member of the New York May 1st Coalition and the National

Movement for Worker and Immigrant Rights, is actively supporting these efforts in every way possible. We urge you to do the same!

In many cultures Spring is a re-beginning after the long winter. In Chinese
thought, Spring is a reminder that Nature and our lives exsist in Cycles.
Everything has a beginning-middle-end... How we move through the cycles of the
days, months and years is reflected in our spirit-mind-heart-body. Let's share
the importance of Cycles and how we can heal from habits: ways of seeing and
being that don't support our growth.

We will honor the season by:

Looking at the energy of the liver and other organs associated with the spring

Exploring the connection of womyn's health issues

Looking at being in balance and out of balance

Looking at the energy of the season

Moving Meditation

Questions and answers about the season and our relationship to it.

Join us in a ritual to honor the spirit of the Spring Solstice as we tap into
our heart chakra and rebirth ourselves every Spring. You are invited to release
and grow in this place of magic, new beginnings, and life as you cultivate &
nourish self love and the planet in the celebration of light, inner-child, open

Women of Power Conference 2007

The focus of the panel discussion series in 2007 will be to highlight the

lives of Afro Latina activists. As we do the work to empower our communities

there is little information available on the personal stories of women who become

activists. As the issues that confront our communities are addressed it is also

important to understand the commitment and networking of individuals, community groups

and organizations that assume the responsibility of assuring a civil society that practices

social justice, racial and cultural equity and equal opportunities for all. The focus of

Campaign to End Child Sexual Abuse
03-23-07

Contact Justine Torress at Casa to book
a workshop, showing of our video or for more information at 718-585-5540 or
email at justineatcasa@aol.com.

Chakra Balancing

Workshop

Febuary 8th, 2007 @ 6:30-8PM

$ 7 suggested donation

Do you Feel Stuck in Your life?

Are you living in fear and loneliness?

Do you have limited awareness?

Are you not speaking your truth?

Come tap into your Chakra’s to support you with dreaming, balancing and communication during Winter.

What Are Chakras?

· The Chakras are energy centers.

· These 7 Chakras are who and what we are, what we feel and how we think and transform,

· they are how we express ourselves and how we create…

· The Chakra system is the means by which we
gain awareness.

· It is how we experience life,

· how we perceive reality,

· And how we relate to self, others and the
world.

· It is life itself.

· Connects us with the present, past, future,
ancestors and all living entities.

Why is it Important to Balance them?

Chakras hold the key to spiritual awakening, psychological well-being and physical health.

If there is a blockage from life, trauma, etc. our mind and well-being are affected.

03-09-06

Until it is safe for abused mothers and children to reach out for help without fearing that the response will be the removal of their children, the fight continues with me!

Until the are no more children and mothers being abused, the fight continues with me!

PLEASE JOIN US---A CALL TO ACTION

Speak out at Casa Atabex Ache to address concerns of violence(sexual harassment, rape, child sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, relationship abuse) in the lives of young womyn within families, communities & the Child Welfare System (schools, prisons, group homes, & foster care) & share your personal experiences with child abuse.

Join us on March 15th & Say No More Violence, in my life, family and community!”

• What is your experience & impact of violence within the child welfare system on young womyn of color?
• What do you think the responsibility of community is when all else fails?
• Create a community response to the City & Administration for Children Services, the child welfare system and create a collective voice to stop child abuse (sexual, physical, mental and spiritual).

WHAT: Speak Out to examine Child Sexual Abuse in the recent deaths of Nixzmary Brown, and other children in the Foster Care System. Child Sexual Abuse and all forms of family/community violence continues to be side stepped & ignored in these cases, and we want bring to the forefront the impact of violating womyn’s & children’s human rights.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 15th @ 6:30 PM

WHERE: Casa Atabex Ache –Call to register! Contact Toyin Adebanjo @ 718-585-4450
471 East 140th Street, Basement Level btw Brook & Willis Ave

WHO: YOU, youth, immigrants, foster moms, grandmothers, aunts, school officials, social workers, council members, community based organizations & other concerned New Yorkers.

WHAT IS CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE?

We define Child Sexual Abuse as:
The emotional, spiritual, sexual, mental, physical abuse of a youth by someone with more power. This includes rape, foundling of genitals, incest, molestation, sexual harassment, sexual assault, verbal abuse, battering, violence related to exploitation, forced sex-work, intimidation in educational institutions, foster care and elsewhere, including threats of such acts of violence, coercion or random denial of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life. Child Sexual Abuse also includes coercion to view pornography, watching youth undress, the dating of a youth by an adult for example a 21-year-old male dating a 15-year-old female.

In response to this on going violence and human rights violation, we at Casa Atabex Ache have taken up a community based campaign to end all forms of violence against youth. We are concerned about the social and economic conditions that create the sexual exploitation and violation of children and young womyn. We want to create a response & action plan to support the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). We are answering to the call by the ACS for community voices and involvement to create a system that is accountable to ending violence & keeping children safe.

OUR Goals:
To “End Child Abuse” (sexual, mental, physical, emotional and spiritual) in the Child Welfare System, our communities and in our lives healing from trauma within a holistic model.
To reduce and eliminate the harmful impacts of child abuse within childhood, and adulthood.

Letter of Concern about Child Sexual Abuse & Past & Recent Deaths in the Foster Care System from Community Voices.

Child Sexual Abuse and all forms of family & community violence violates the Human Rights of womyn and children throughout New York City and within the child welfare system. This violence, which is compounded in communities of color need to be addressed in a holistic and socially conscious framework. Our communities are barely surviving because of the daily acts of violence on their mind, body, and spirits the State.

The recent murders of Nixzmary Brown & Quachaun Browne leaves us with these question:
1. What are the root causes of violence in our communities?
2. How does poverty, economic disparities, immigration, police brutality, racism, gender violence, and homophobia, affect the decisions that womyn and children make in order to survive?

In the case of Nixzmary Brown the issue of Child Sexual Abuse is not being addressed by the Administration for Children Services, the City, or the press, although Cesar Rodriguez her stepfather was charged with first-degree sexual assault. We still ask why is this happening? Nixzmary’s murder & sexual violence is not an isolated case. Sexually abused young womyn of color get re-victimized everyday---in school, at home, in prisons and especially as they transition from home to home in the foster care system. This cycle of violence needs to end and be brought to the forefront of the front pages. Our Community is demanding that the abuse of the human rights of womyn, girls and children get addressed. Our Community is saying no more deaths of our children, no more sexual exploitation of our mothers and daughters, no more neglect of our communities. The silent voices of young Womyn of Color in the child welfare system and in our communities need to be heard.

Casa Atabex Ache is committed to the following short term goals:
• Give voice to community so that they can break the silence & taboo of Child Abuse
• Continuing to provide safe space for healing, liberation, social chanage for young & adult Womyn of Color.
• Sharing community stories of trauma, healing and resiliency
• Supporting individuals in healing & recovery in a model that is holistic in mind, body & spirit.
• Holding community meetings on our child abuse campaign to create social change.
• Documenting stories of Child Abuse within the Child Welfare System to educate community so that they can create and hold accountability.

Peace and Women's Activist Anna Ortega is in immediate need of your support
01-01-06

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY, ANNOUNCE AT MEETINGS, BROADCAST, GRAFFITI,
LEAFLET--in other words, spread the word.

Peace and Women's Activist Anna Ortega is in immediate need of your support.

WHAT HAPPENED
In early December Anna had severe joint pain and swelling. She was in the hospital for a week and now she is staying at Dee's from Casa Atabex Ache. We have put together a support care team to assure she gets daily care. Even though she is doing a little better she is still having difficulty walking, has plot of pain and fatigue. The Doctors don't know what she has. Her recovery is coming along slowly and will need alternative treatments. At the time of the onset of the illness she was working on a trip to Chiapas that she will not be able to go on. She was also going to start a new job and had other projects at CASA.
She longs to get back to her organizing which she has been very excited about, and this is part of what is sustaining her.

WHAT SHE NEEDS
Anna still hopes to continue with all of her commitments, but right now, she cannot be left alone, cannot cook for herself, or take public transportation, cannot make phone calls ,email or pay bills. She requires constant in-home care and has no money to pay for it. Anna is relying on the community network that has been sitting with her, cooking and cleaning and taking her to doctor's appointments. Donations from friends have allowed her to get some of the alternative care, but she will need this level of care for at least several more months.

Please come visit, she still needs people to be with her in the
afternoons and early evenings, and support with some specific tasks that she's unable to handle. To support with cooking, rides and errands contact Dee . Email her at Fuerzagoddess@aol.com or to speak to Anna please call 2129282543.

Please spread the word to people who know and love her work, that donations made at this time will make a tremendous difference. Tax deductible contributions can be sent to her at Casa Atabex Ache

On behalf of Anna we thank you, Lots of Love the Casa Collective

Casa Atabex Ache—The House of Womyns Power is seeking new members for its Board of Directors, we are seeking more than a board member we are seeking sisters to join our family!

Casa Atabex Ache is the only organization by and for young and adult womyn of color in the South Bronx. We support womyn in tapping into their innate power to end & heal from the multiple forms of violence they experience in their lives and create new possibilities for themselves, their families and communities. Since 1994, through a holistic model we provide programs that integrate intensive spiritual & personal development and political education as an organizing model for social justice and human rights & the self-healing and self-determination of womyn of color. The founders of Casa embarked on a journey to create an organization where young and adult womyn can be the powerful womyn they are without the madness, the self-blame, & the judgment. They built a safe space where sisters can collectively tap into our resiliency and celebrate our strengths and traditions and use them as tools of resiliency to combat the attacks on our self-confidence and awareness and foster our self-empowerment and self worth.

CASA ATABEX ACHÉ Supporting Women of Color in Mind, Body and Spirit The nonprofit Casa Atabex Aché was founded “to foster reconnection to the innate power of healing, transformation and social action in young and adult womyn of color,” according to Executive Director Dayanara Marte. (The organization purposely alters the spelling of “women” in recognition of women’s rights and power.)Since it was established in 1994, Casa Atabex Aché/The House of Womyn’s Power has supported women in liberating their spirit by providing a number of holistic programs for self-empowerment and healing. Its mission is to help women of all ages connect with their inner energy to heal and transform their lives, families, communities and world.
Entre Mujeres/Between Women is a training and support program offered year-round for adult women. Some topics
of focus include holistic/alternative healing workshops, stress reduction, yoga, nutrition, peer counseling and
referrals, retreats, intervention and violence prevention services. The Fuerza/Power Program is directed at young women ages 12 to 18 to support them in making informed choices. It is an after-school curriculum that emphasizes
life skills, leadership and assertiveness training, health education and cultural empowerment and it provides a wealth of information on issues affecting women’s culture, family and community. Participants put skills into practice
through a variety of community action projects. The Warrior Women/Mujeres Guerreras Program empowers mothers and guardians of young women to organize the community and advocate for adequate reproductive health services,
public education, welfare rights, foster care and employment opportunities.

Over the past year, Casa Atabex Aché
has worked with more than 25 community based organizations and has facilitated over 50 educational forums,
presentations, retreats and trainings. Since it was founded, the nonprofit has touched the lives of 10,000 women, with
approximately 1,000 women participating in its programs annually. “Over the next two years, Casa is embarking on a strategic planning process to further our mission of individual transformation and community empowerment,” Marte explains. “We aim to diversify our funding sources and
increase staff to support new initiatives, which now include a comprehensive holistic domestic violence program,
fitness/nutritional program, cultural arts after-school program, eating disorder/body image program and alternative health center, among many other dreams.”

Dec 9th "ORGANIZING FROM THE "INSIDE OUT" w/ CASA
12-07-04

Come support Casa Welcoming 2005, letting go of 2004@ NYU
Free to the public and open to all!

Thursday, Dec 9th, 2004 NYU Womyn's Center is sponsoring "ORGANIZING FROM "THE INSIDE OUT"? with CASA
Time--7pm
Location--Kimmel Center Room 803
60 Washington Square South

We all have a story to tell, we live in the same communities we are
fighting for and we are busy taking care of other people. Are you burnt
out or stressed?
When was the last time someone took care of you? When was the last time you took time for yourself?

In this workshop, we will build community, reclaim spiritual and
cultural practices and learn how to use them as tools of resiliency, and
resistance to war, oppression and violence in our lives, families and
communities, at home and abroad. We will provide alternative techniques and methods of healing for community and individual empowerment, determination and sustainability. Casa uses this approach to address the root causes and affects of internalized, interpersonal and institutional oppression on our bodies, minds and spirits.
JOIN US as we tap into the individual and collective power of our
community.

Through experiential exercises participants will develop an
appreciation for taking time for self. We will share our tools of resiliency and take time for ourselves to de-stress, release feelings and re charge. We will identify communal concerns and everyday stresses that do not let us be the powerful people we are.

Dejemos de hablar hasta que hagamos la palabra luminosa y active (let's work not talk, let's say nothing until we've made the world luminous and active). Basta de pasividad y de pasatiempo mientras esperamos al novio, a la novia, a la Diosa, o a la Revolucion (enoughpassivity and passing time while waiting for the boyfriend, the girlfriend, the Goddess, or the Revolution). No nos podemos quedar paradas con los brazos cruzados en medio del puente (we cannot afford to stop in the middle of the bridge with arms crossed). “Gloria Anzaldua"

If you have questions please contact Casa @ 718-585-5540 or casaatabexache@aol.com and ask for Anna.
